The team that I am responsible for managing range in age from 23 to 65. It is a dynamic environment that sometimes involves life and death issues. Prior to reading the ‘Power Shift’ book and using the techniques in the book I thought my team was performing the best I could expect. I was using tools and ideas from management books and training I had received in the past and still had a team with a lot of disciplinary and training issues. They often needed reminders and follow-up and did not seem very happy or engaged. After about three months and with some trial and error of applying the book to my management style, I was able to make dramatic improvements in the team. We now have significantly less repeat training and disciplinary action. Most importantly the team works to help each other, is happier, more productive, less stressed. In turn this also allows me as a manager to have less stress, and I am able to successfully manage my team and exceed company goals.
There are many books on leadership, personality styles and generational difference in the workplace. Finding one book that covers it all in a seamless fashion, supported by research and brought to life with engaging stories is a rare find. This book is that rare find. Sherry Buffington, Ph.D., and Marc Schwartz have a positive view (and an accurate one, in my opinion) of the newer generations, not just the ‘older’ ones. They highlight the strengths, discuss the weaknesses of each generation and give excellent advice for influencing all generations to do their best work and to live their best lives.
The chapter on ‘Getting the Best From People’ is worth the price of the entire book, but you will want what’s in the rest of the book. This book isn’t just for leaders and managers – it’s for anyone who wants to understand themselves and others better and who wants to understand human behavior and performance and how to influence self and others more effectively.
A BOOK ON THE LEADERSHIP OF UNDERSTANDING
As a management consultant to many corporations, I see the impact of what happens when leadership does not understand the principles of leading a new generation. We live in extraordinary times, when breakthrough ideas and innovation are absolutely essential. Sherry Buffington and Marc Schwartz, in their book ‘Power Shift,’ have the essence of how to manage a diverse workforce in such rapidly changing times.
They demonstrate that a ‘Leadership of Understanding’ and the tools that support it, is now the leadership model that will lead to inspiration and performance of each generation. The book is enriched by fascinating stories and complex ideas have been distilled into simple, easy-to-implement concepts, processes, and exercises. ‘Power Shift’ is a must-read for leaders of a diverse workforce and for traditional workers who are re-entering today’s organizations.
‘POWER SHIFT’ IS LIKE HAVING YOUR OWN EXECUTIVE CONSULTANT/COACH IN THE OFFICE WITH YOU!
‘Power Shift’ is easy to understand and filled with solid research, interesting facts, great business stories, and guidance with the ‘whys’ behind how to effectively and permanently shift the exhausting reality of America’s disengaged young workforce. ‘Power Shift’ is direct. For busy executives and business owners, it has a load of powerful tools and resources that make sense and are immediately usable to instantly empower you and your workforce!
‘POWER SHIFT’ WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO ALL LEADERS & MANAGERS
‘Power Shift’ provided some very unique insights and strategies on how Baby Boomers have to shift their approach to leadership if they are going to stay relevant in business. The section on Structured Freedom was especially insightful in terms of where most organizational cultures need to evolve to in order to better tap into the energy and commitment of younger workers. A must-read for those interested in taking their leadership skills and capabilities to the next level.
This amazing book is a must-read for anyone interested in creating work environments that are solid, engaged and productive. ‘Power Shift’ acts as a guide to navigating the waters between generations to return the focus of the workplace to productivity and goal achievement, both personally and professionally. Thank you Marc Schwartz and Sherry Buffington for this careful study of Millennials and the new rules of engagement.
A REVOLUTION IN CULTIVATING A HEALTHY, SUCCESSFUL, AND DYNAMIC LEADERSHIP MINDSET FOR AN ENGAGED WORKFORCE
‘Power Shift: The New Rules of Engagement’ is a revolution in cultivating a healthy, successful and dynamic leadership mindset for an engaged workforce. Sherry Buffington and Marc Schwartz deconstruct outdated and ineffective leadership beliefs while clearly communicating successful principles that lead to positively stimulating and engaging the rapidly expanding Millennial workforce.
This is an amazing look at how this generation will change the world. I was especially taken by the idea that business management must change now or see their companies fall behind. This is truly leading edge stuff. Worth reading more than once!
Phenomenal read. Highly recommend!
